Yam & Apple Casserole Recipe- Baked Side Dish

Serve yam and apple casserole as a toasty warm side dish with your holiday dinner. Or, make it the way I do, as a crustless yam and apple pie with a spoon of ice cream for dessert.

Use this list to help you set up fast without any guess-work to make baking fast, easy and fun.

  • 2 qt. baking dish – Use an oven proof glass dish or cake pan.
  • small sauce pan
  • wIre whisk or flat wire whisk
  • baking tray or sheet: Use tray to cook yams before making this recipe. A baking tray is also good for distributing heat, and keeps cakes from burning on the bottom (like my oven does).

Ingredients For Yam & Apple Casserole

No one should have to run to the store to hunt down missing ingredients. Take a quick glance and make sure you have everything you need to start baking.

  • 1 yam or sweet potato
  • 2 apples
  • butter
  • sugar
  • cornstarch
  • salt
  • lemon juice – freshly squeezed is always best but you can use bottled lemon juice.

Baked yams & apples casserole is a favorite holiday side dish. Make ahead for a quick holiday side dish, warm and serve.

Ingredients

  • 1 large yam cooked and sliced

  • 2 apples peeled and sliced

  • 1/4 cup butter

  • 1/2 cup sugar

  • 1 1/2 tablespoon cornstarch

  • 1 cup water

  • 1 pinch salt

  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

  • 1 bag mini marsh-mellow optional

Directions

  • Layer sliced apples and yams 1/4″ thick and place in a 2 qt. baking dish
  • In a small sauce pan add butter, sugar, corn starch, water and salt.
  • Whisk mixture together and to a boil until thick. Don’t stop whisking.
  • Turn off heat and whisk lemon juice into mixture.
  • Pour thickened sauce over yams and apples.
  • Bake at 350°F for 1 hour**
  • Candied Yams” with marshmallow topping:
  • Top with mini-marshmallows and place back in oven.
  • Bake until marshmallows are fluffy and toasted (about 10 minutes)

Notes

  • Serving Suggestions: Make ahead for a quick thanksgiving side dish or dessert. Before serving warm up or top with mini marshmallow and toast until golden brown
  • How to make candied yams: Use this recipe as instructed, after baking remove from oven and evenly top with mini marshmallows. Place casserole back in the oven until marshmallows are lightly toasted on the top (about 10 minutes).
  • Crustless apple and yam pie: top with dairy-free whipped topping.
  • Individual Serving Ideas – candied sweet potato or yams: Cook individual yams or sweet potatoes. Scrape out each yam to create a pocket to hold filling. Side should be about 1/2″ thick around the shell, fill each yam 3/4 with filling. Add sauce and bake. Top with mini marshmallows and toast until done.

How to Make “Candied Yam” Individual Servings:

Cook individual yams or sweet potatoes. Scrape out each yam to create a pocket to hold filling. Shells should be about 1/2″ thick around all sides.

Fill each shell with yam and apple casserole filling. Add a little sauce to each serving and bake (about 45 minutes). Top with mini marshmallows and toast until golden brown.
